So it was a clear Friday evening when this race happened, my Wife and Son came along to watch also which was an added boost.

I felt good having gotten a 10k PB a few days before whilst running off road, with a route that was similar to the one I was about to run. We lined up, being my first proper mass start the atmosphere was awesome and I don’t think I will forget it, hearing the gun go and then watching down the line as the sea of runners started to bob up and down before it reached where I stood and then we we’re off.

It took a while to get into a rhythm avoiding slower runners and kerbs as the whole running field spread out swallowing the road before we we’re then funnelled into the parts of the course that was 2 way, once in the zone with other runners around me you tended to find that you catch up to another runner and then go passed them in the hope that you hadn’t gone to early. I had already pre planned the route and time of when I should go strong and hold back but using the watch and distance as a gauge this seemed to work, passing a couple of people I knew who were marshalling gave me that extra boost.

First lap passed quickly and I felt good, taking on some water and just sticking to the plan even when others came passed, knowing that going up the hill again on the second lap was going to be my time of whether to go or not. See running clubs members struggling on the hill the second time round I knew it was time to go after the downhill section on a small distance away. I went like a rocket after coming down the hill the othersie and overtaking multiple people who had just over taken me, my legs and my body felt good and I really pushed the last 2km of the course knowing that my wife and Son would be waiting. With less than 1km to go and with someone trying to go with me it was on and I pushed again with then the finish straight to do, giving high fives as I crossed the line with spectators. I stopped my watch and looked down, awesome another 10k PB.

After the 10k my body felt like it could of gone on further with the high and buzz of the event pushing me and helping me feel stronger, I am not sure how much longer at the pace I could of gone but hey its nice to know. I really enjoyed the race with a nice medal at the finish line, it glows in the dark don’t you know, I would do this event again. Oh and did I mention that I did this in new shoes that I had only just purchased during that week…..(more on that another time)

Ok so just went on here and realised that it was August since my last post, wow that was a few months ago now.

So what’s been happening, a few things since that last post which we now be posted over the next few days, but here are a few points.

  • Did a great 10k PB in the 10k race and really enjoyed it.
  • Another PB this time for the 5k, on the last race of the series.
  • Did 175km in August as part of one of the Strava challenges.
  • Took a little break and seemed to have come back stronger
  • Oh and got in via a ballot place in the London Marathon 2016

So I covered this a while ago about running to and from work and with another 5k race coming up thought I could grab a layin with a little training for the next race. So this week I have done the run twice to and from work with last week only once. Mainly due to time and just having a few things to do at home.

So how has it gone, not too bad at all I have been enjoying it again and recently decided to purchase a new backpack just for the running side of things I have noticed a little improvement on the way in and on the way home, with the air temp being hot which doesn’t always help but I am defiantly becoming a better runner.

The run to and from work is 5k each way so this really does help to get the training in, this morning tho the route seemed to whizz by and so I am happy how my running is progressing with it becoming easier as the time goes on, thinking back to Feb/March when I started, I feel now in the last month its all just clicking with it all becoming more pleasurable.

I will post a little review of the backpack I purchased in the next week, but so far I am very happy with it and how it does help my running but thought I would post about my runs to work which I have now done a few more of.

A lot can be said for getting your running form right and I feel this last month and moreover the last 2 weeks of my running everything has clicked, I am able to do a stride of 170+ a minute now which is right where I want to be and with my posture and what seems like ease it all seems to be coming together which I am really happy about, its taken awhile and a lot of my running time upto now has had me thinking about my form, about the arms, my body posture etc with now it seeming to becoming more like second nature.

You have to remember I am not a member of any club nor have I had any coaching, its just from what I have read and what seems to have worked for me with of course not everything working and just appling what fits I have been able to get to a decent standard with my stats proving this.

Recently I have really gotten into running off road, or trail running as it is called. Just started to have enough of the normal running routes I do and also the fact the pavement when running is a complete arse, the way it slopes or is uneven or just people walking so have to go pass them in the road is not overall great.

As I live not too far from the countryside I thought I would expand my running on to some of the MTB routes that I do and I have been able to turn this little off road jaunt into a 11km run with recently missing my PB for 10k whilst being off road to which I am really happy with my progress.

The route I go is 90% off road with some road/pavement parts to help join it up, its not an easy route with a couple of long and steep hills thrown in to get the legs fired up, but I do seem to be making good time and progress with the attitude of not giving in I have been able to really push myself and get my body used to this.

As you can see the from the above it’s a nice little run very local to me with out losing family time! Let me know what your runs are like compared to this as I am sure its not the hardest but first thing, when I do most of my running its a good little tester.

With the internet the ability to quickly find something out is only a short tap away.

Type “running enter what you will here” and you will have more results than you know what to do with. So it is key to try and find the most relevant parts to the search results for you, this can be hard and can end up trawling the results for some hours without too much, again everyone is different so reading as much as you can always helps.

I have found that YouTube has been very good in not only reviews but also techniques to be used when running, warming up or down and eating.

One of the better ones I have been viewing is the Running Wild by 2 people who seem to be able to convey things very well for a newbie like me anyway.

One for reviews who is very good and has a good following is DC Rainmaker who does some excellent reviews of equipment he uses, allowing you to compare different makes/models and also allows other to comment on their experiences.

Lastly for reviews on running shoes etc it has to be Running Shoe Guru who has a nice site which allows you to find the correct shoes based on experience of a user.

Go and give them a look, I am not affiliated with them just find that they really do help a newbie.
